AWIU Grant Program
Printable Grant Brochure

American Women for International Understanding (AWIU), a non-profit, non-governmental organization, was established to create an international network of women to foster understanding and goodwill among nations. Members seek to acquire knowledge through study, travel, and symposia designed to develop international understanding, especially among women.

The principal educational purposes of AWIU are accomplished through a grant program offered worldwide to women who speak English, are ambitious and enterprising in their home and communities, and who could even be considered as future leaders in their communities.

Candidates may be self-referred or referred by an organization. Candidates with academic goals must have completed undergraduate work. Primary cities for AWIU work/study opportunities are San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

The responsibility for her program is with the applicant. The choice of subject, location of study, acceptance by an American organization, and a scheduled program must be in place before it is submitted to the Grant Committee for review. The applicant should submit her plan for work/study, or internship and evidence of acceptance by the American organization in which she will work. The Grant Committee will review the completed application and, if it is recommended, will present it to the Board of AWIU for approval and allotment of funds. The Board meets four times a year.

Awards are paid in U.S. dollars in amounts varying from $2,500 to $5,000 and customarily are used for airfare and living expenses. Periods of study may vary; we emphasize however that the candidate must have an approved, planned program in place well in advance of arrival. The awardee will be assigned a main contact person in her city who will coordinate other contacts with AWIU members. AWIU will offer non-monetary assistance in finding housing, if the awardee requests such assistance. Members anticipate meeting the awardee and suggesting outings and visits.

The purpose of the AWIU grant program is to give women from other countries individual, person-to-person contact with Americans. We hope to provide sponsored women with greater insight, knowledge and understanding of life in the United States, including a special understanding of the various roles of American women. Through our educational awards to women, AWIU also hopes to develop an ongoing relationship with the country of the sponsored woman.
