Chiapas is a state in Mexico. Chiapas is also part of Mesoamerica, a term used to describe an area extending from central Mexico to Nicaragua where a complex of ancient civilizations developed before the arrival of the Spanish. Chiapas is located in the Mayan area of Mesoamerica near where Mexico borders Guatemala. The emphasis of this delegation will be on the indigenous people of Chiapas and their culture. We will begin with a visit to Palenque and continue on to San Cristobal de las Casas where we will spend 6 nights. San Cristobal de las Casas is a colonial town built on a plateau in the mountains. The population of San Cristobal is 30% indigenous people and the communities in the mountains surrounding the city are 80% indigenous. One of the highlights of this delegation will be spending a day in a community which rarely welcomes visitors. The delegation will begin in Villahermosa and conclude in Tuxtla Gutierrez. We spent 2 nights in Palenque and 6 nights in San Cristobal de las Casas. Click below for the delegation report.
