American Women For International Understanding
MISSION STATEMENT – Promotes woman-to-woman interaction and understanding Worldwide through meaningful visits, grants, educational support, the celebration and support of the International Women of Courage, and participation of local Chapters which act locally and affect globally.
AWIU connects women to women around the world, as it has done since 1968.
- We sponsor delegations of our members to visit women in other countries.
- Our grants focus on strengthening the work of women within the U.S. and around the world.
- Our local chapters educate and support women world-wide.
- We yearly honor the Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage.

AWIU 2015 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN OF COURAGE CELEBRATION MARCH 4, 2015: American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) hosted a dinner in honor of the 2015 International Women of Courage Awardees at the National Press Club on the evening of March 4, 2015.

2015 International Women of Courage Celebration
American Women for International Understanding presented The 8th Annual International Women of Courage Celebration on March 4th, 2015 at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. The 2015 Honorary Committee was chaired by award-winning journalist and TV personality Katie Couric. The AWIU Internationalism Award was presented to Laurie Garrett, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and expert on global health systems and the spread of deadly viruses, from AIDS to Ebola. Jane Mursener Wetzel was named the Bernice Behrens Award recipient for her outstanding leadership of AWIU.Learn More

AWIU Delegates in Burma/Myanmar In January 2014
Our Burma/Myanmar Delegation had an educational visit. With planned visits our delegation learned about the culture and heritage, non-profits/non-governmental organizations and the daily living in Burma. Our delegates are back in the U.S. now and are preparing to educate other AWIU members and non members. We are hosting a Burmese night on Friday January 24, 2014 in San Francisco – all AWIU members and friends of AWIU members are invited.The Delegation travelled to the major cities and met with leading women’s groups, politicians, micro lenders and others during their 12 day trip.
